John Winder grew up on a cattle ranch in southwestern New Mexico. His experiences during these formative years led to a strong interest in biology and agricultural sciences. He pursued these interests and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at New Mexico State University focusing on animal sciences and genetics.
After completing his master’s degree, John advised and assisted agricultural enterprises in Oklahoma and owned and managed his own businesses in New Mexico and Colorado. This provided him with important exposure to the challenges of managing labor, finances, and risk. These experiences also instilled in him a keen awareness of the need for constant innovation and proactive change. John’s experiences also aroused a strong interest in expanding his knowledge base. This led him to return to college and pursue a doctorate in animal breeding and genetics at Colorado State University. After which he held faculty appointments, consultancies, and senior leadership roles at major public land-grant universities, a large nonprofit foundation, and a privately funded public service organization. His leadership responsibilities in these organizations included personnel management and professional development, oversight of multimillion-dollar budgets, development of communications strategies and technologies, accountability for program outcomes, and creation and implementation of long-term plans. Throughout his career, John was appointed to statewide, multistate, and national boards, commissions, and advisory councils. These provided input to and governance for large natural resources, education, and public service organizations. In this capacity, he was also responsible for evaluating numerous funding proposals, assessing outcomes of programs conducted by the organizations, and providing feedback to organizational leadership. John and his wife, Patty, live in McCall, Idaho. |
